"PIXEL ART IS AWESOME"

Seriously though this video is hilarious. I've dabbled in RPG Maker XP a longgg time ago. This was finished Mid-2008, I might give it a try, and maybe gamersfire rpg? who knows.

Watch the video.

I've tried RPG makers since the version 2000 and I must say that I like VX the best. Even though a lot of the default settings annoy me a bit, they still can be changed.

I really hate the part that importing new tiles in VX is a real pain, it was way easier in XP.

I disagree with the part in the video where it says that you can easily create it without any programming knowledge though. While it's true that you can make something without that knowledge, it will look rather generic. For making a great game, you need do some scripting. Fortunately though, there are loads of RPG maker forums where users post their own scripts and other resources, even support.

So in a sense, you CAN get great results without knowing how to create that code yourself since a lot of people give their great inventions out for free.

Anyway, creating an RPG requires hard work and dedication, just randomly mapping will get you nowhere. For great results, all the aspects must be top-notch. Though, I'm willing to forgive a lot in a game if it has a great story. Unfortunately, that's where a lot of people get it wrong - they'll make a pretty looking game (with other people's scripts and resources) but without any real content. Of course, there are loads of GREAT rpg maker gamers as well, I just like talking about the faults more.

This made me want to give it a go again, especially since I'm writing a light novel, I have various stories in my head that could work in an RPG. I don't really want to use the default resources, but whatever.

~ Edit ~
In another note, didn't someone in Ze Fire post their own little RPG maker game a while back? I remember being really silly and parodish, featuring some angels, azn and Falcon. Maybe I'm just crazy but I remember something wacky and awesome like that.

RMVX isn't a good as RMXP BUT I prefer if they put the 2 together! There is elements in XP that I would have liked to see in VX such as MOAR tilesets but hey...Not every program is perfect!!

I went through a serious RPG maker phase back in the day. It's a cool program, but unless the person making the game is good enough with custom scrips, and extra features, most games turn out to be fairly generic.

Don't like the battle sytem where you only see your character's face, guess you can change that with a script though.

It depends on your interests involved and the style of play, each manufacturer has its ups and downs. Both are easy to use. It is just down, do you want a new more sophisticated, or do you want a hand to the old established games. VX is only one thing that makes it easier for the creation of fast events, which is not really a big step in the drive factor.
